Description

Description

This Spool holder is designed for 1Kg Spools, its main purpose is to install it inside of a shelf or cupboard so you can feed it directly to your printer. you can however also use it as wall mount or tabletop Spool holder

You have three different Axles to choose from:

This was specifically designed to fit the Polymaker cardboard spools as that is primerely what i use. but it will fit other spools too as the outer radius of the axle is squishable from 55 to approx. 50mm)

  1. Axle for Polymaker spools (Bearings required 22x8x7)
  2. A generic axle with a diameter of 22mm (Bearings required 22x8x7)
  3. A generic none rotating axle with a diameter of 22mm (no Bearings required)

Features:

  • Fits all 1Kg spools
  • PTFE Passtrough (Spool can remain in shelf / cupboard while in use)
  • Prints with as little support as possible due to its design.
  • Bearing Axle as well as none Bearing version available.

Id appreciate any type of feedback, also if you like this design kindly consider to leave me a positive rating.

Bill of parts:

  1. 20cm Filament tube
  2. 1pcs. M10 PTFE connector
  3. 5pcs screws for installation in shelf (optional)

In case you are using the bearing version you will need

2pcs. 608zz bearings 22mmx8mmx7mm

Preassembly notes:

As for the assembly I would like to mention that I laid out the Axle diameter slightly bigger than the Bearings inside diameter. That should ensure a proper seat of the bearings. Depending on your printer, settings, shrinkage, and other factors the seat might vary a bit. If you need to you can use fine grid sandpaper to adjust slightly.

Be careful don’t overdo it!!

  • Please note the axle is slightly longer than the actual holder width (2,5mm each side) This is by design to make up for the flex of the PLA at the given length.
  • The Axle should be seated in the holder with a snug fit so there is no struggle to insert or remove it from the holder.

Shelf or cupboard installation:

Step 1:

drill a 6 to 10mm hole into the shelf where you would like the Filament to exit the shelf or cupboard. And make sure you have enough space at this position inside the shelf for the spool holder. (take proper measurements if needed)

Step 2:

insert a 5mm Allen key from the outside into the hole you just drilled, this is used as a guide to align the PTFE connector and the fixating screws with the whole in the shelf.

Step 3:

Slide the Spool holder with the hole for the PTFE connector over the allen key you inserted. Get the angle of the Spool holder to your liking and fixate it to the inside shelf wall. (You can se a piece of tape, or double-sided sticky tape on the back to temporarily keep it in place.)

Step 5:

Mark all five holes for the screws.

Step 6:

Take of the Spool holder out of the shelf and install the PTFE connector.

Step 7:

Drill 2mm pilot holes where you marked the fixation points before.

Step 8:

Mount the spool holder to the inside shelf wall using the correct screw length required for your board thickness. Do not use power tools for this step as they easily strip wood.

(Especially if you are using an IKEA shelfs :D)

Step 9:

Cut a piece of PTFE tubing (13-15 cm) and insert it into the PTFE connector.

This is used as a semi stiff guide to help guide the Filament without bending or scratching the surface of the filament.

Last and final Step 10:

Pick your desired Axle and fit it with the 22/08/07 Bearings.

Insert it into the Filament spool and slide the bearings into the slot of the Holder.

Now Guide your Filament through the PTFE tubing and out of your shelf.
