Description

Geneva Drive Mechanism (Maltese Cross)

"Turning continuous rotation into dramatic pauses: The ultimate mechanical cliffhanger."

"Pauses more frequently than your Wi-Fi on a rainy day, but with 100% higher mechanical precision."

"Proof that even gears need a break before taking another 90-degree step in life."

How It Works & The Physics Behind It

The Geneva Drive (or Maltese Cross) is a fundamental mechanical arrangement designed to convert smooth, continuous rotation into precise, intermittent rotary motion.

  • Intermittent Kinematics: As the driving wheel rotates continuously, its drive pin slides smoothly into the slot of the driven wheel, advancing it by exactly 90 degrees per rotation before exiting.
  • Angular Acceleration & Inertia: Unlike standard gears that maintain constant velocity, the driven wheel accelerates from zero speed to peak angular velocity and decelerates back to zero during each step. This requires precise force management to handle rotational inertia.
  • Integrated Mechanical Locking: While the drive pin is outside the slot, the raised circular cam on the driving wheel fits perfectly into the crescent cutout of the driven wheel. This physical constraint prevents any unwanted movement or backlash due to static friction and mechanical geometric locking.
