Transform, twist, play… and do it again. 🔄
This transforming articulated fidget starts as a compact sphere and unfolds into a long, satisfying spiral structure with a simple twisting motion.
The model was developed from scratch with the help of ChatGPT Codex, based on my own design ideas, requirements, dimensions and testing process. No existing STL or 3D model was used as the starting point.
After several design adjustments and real-world print tests, the final version was printed successfully in PLA and tested as a functional fidget.
The mechanism is designed as a print-in-place articulated model, meaning there is no assembly required after printing. Once the print is finished, carefully loosen the individual moving sections and the fidget is ready to use.
Features
• Print-in-place mechanism
• No assembly required
• Transforming sphere-to-spiral design
• Articulated moving sections
• Satisfying twisting movement
• Great as a desk toy or fidget
• Single-color print
• Tested in PLA
• STL and ready-to-print 3MF included
First use
After printing, allow the model to cool completely before removing it from the build plate.
Gently move each articulated section individually the first time. Do not force the entire mechanism at once, especially if your printer creates a strong first-layer squish.
Once all sections are free, the ball can be repeatedly transformed between its compact spherical shape and its extended spiral form.
Printing
The model shown in the photos was printed in PLA.
For the best results, I recommend using the included 3MF file, which contains the prepared print setup used for the tested version.
A standard STL file is also included for users who prefer to configure their own slicer settings.
Because this is a moving print-in-place design, good printer calibration and first-layer accuracy are important.
I recommend printing at 100% scale for the intended clearances. Scaling the model down may cause some articulated sections to fuse together.
If you print it, please share your Make and show me which filament color you used! 🔥
Feedback is also very welcome. Real print results help me improve future designs and create more functional fidgets.
