“The Hand on the Ridge”

On a distant ridge stands a colossal castle.

It is older than any human city, its walls built from unknown dark‑gray stones, seams thick with moss and creeping vines. There is no drawbridge, no gate—only a massive iron portcullis streaked with verdigris, and no one has ever seen it open.

Each year on the night of harvest, people from a dozen villages at the foot of the mountain carry torches, bearing grain, cured meat, cloth, and coins. They climb the winding path in silence, place their offerings neatly upon the stone dais before the gate, then step back ten paces, kneel, and bow their heads.

Moments later, a gigantic claw emerges from the crack.

Its scales gleam like obsidian, each knuckle thicker than a grown man’s arm. The claw closes gently, seizing the offerings and coin sacks, then withdraws into the darkness beyond. The entire ritual lasts no more than three breaths.

And then, silence.

No one has ever seen the dragon’s head, its body, or its tail. Only that hand.

Generation after generation, people have woven explanations:

  • “The dragon is so vast it coils beneath the entire mountain, and only one hand can reach the gate.”
  • “It has but one hand left. The body long turned to bone in some ancient war, yet the hand still lives, guarding this empty fortress.”
  • “It is no dragon at all, but a demon within the castle. Whoever beholds its true form will go mad instantly.”

Yet every tale ends with the same warning: do not enter, do not attack, do not disturb.

For the hand accepts wealth without complaint. In years of plenty, it takes more; in lean years, it takes less. It never grows angry, never demands beyond what is given.

This, strangely, makes the villagers believe—

it is a bargain.
