Cardioid Love Flower a Procedural petals Pendant with elegant heart shape

A cardioid is a heart-shaped mathematical curve. The word comes from the Greek kardia (heart) and eidos (form).

While it originates in geometry, the term is most commonly used today in audio technology to describe how microphones pick up sound.

1. In Audio: Cardioid Microphones

In acoustics, a cardioid polar pattern describes a microphone that is highly directional.

• Front Sensitivity: It is most sensitive to sounds coming from directly in front of the capsule.
• Sides & Rear: It reduces sound coming from the sides and rejects sound from the rear almost entirely.
• Best Used For: Vocal recording, podcasting, live stages, and streaming, because it isolates your voice and ignores background noise or room echoes.

2. In Mathematics: The Geometric Curve

In geometry, a cardioid is a specific type of epicycloid.

• How it's made: Imagine two circles of the exact same size. If you keep one fixed and roll the other around its outside edge, the path traced by a single point on the rolling circle forms a cardioid.
• Equation: In polar coordinates, its formula is written as \(r = a(1 - \cos\theta)\).

3. In Real Life: Coffee Cup Reflections

You have likely seen a cardioid without realizing it. When light shines into a round mug or glass filled with liquid, the light rays reflect off the curved walls and focus into a sharp, bright, heart-shaped pattern at the bottom. This optical effect is called a caustic, and its shape is a mathematical cardioid.
